Subject: Update regarding the encampment around Morey Middle School
Just reconnecting with a brief update. After several weeks of very intentional outreach to those encamped around
Morey – including a significant push on Monday – the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment closed the
area this morning. As I mentioned in Saturday’s email, we know how incredibly frustrating this has been for the
neighborhood. On behalf of Mayor Hancock, thank you for your patience and your persistence. These are challenging
times in so many ways. Fortunately, we did have some success connecting those who were living in the encampment
with services, shelter, motel rooms and housing. We will continue to engage our unhoused neighbors as we strive to
expand different types of housing options while also improving our shelters and lowering barriers to access them.
Again, thank you.
Evan

Subject: This Monday at the encampment around Morey Middle School

Good afternoon. Wanted to let you know that on Monday, from 9 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m., there will be increased activity around the encampment at Morey Middle School. Mental-health workers, outreach workers from homeless service providers, and the nonprofit that is trying to set up a managed campsite will all be at the encampment. We will be offering free transportation to those living in the encampment, as well as free storage for belongings. City crews also will be onsite to help dispose of trash. This intensive effort on Monday will NOT involve law enforcement. DPS and Morey leaders are aware of the plans for Monday. We will re-assess the area after the work on Monday is complete and will be back in touch with you soon after. We know this has been incredibly frustrating. Trying to balance multiple public health and public safety needs – particularly during a pandemic, an economic collapse and a time of great social upheaval – has proven even more complex than this work normally is.

Thank you.

Evan
